Project Researchers

Mariam Zahur

Mariam is a talented graduate of Technical University of Mombasa. She studied Development Studies with major in Countering Violent extremism. She is currently a part time Researcher and also a volunteer at Swahilipot Hub in Mombasa. Mariam has a good experience of research on preventing and countering violent extremism. She has worked with academic researchers, International Organizations and local Non –Governmental Organization (NGOs) on various projects focused on violent extremism including Strengthening Resilience to Violent Extremism (STRIVE) at Shimo La Tewa Prison and Women Against Violent Extremism (WAVE I &WAVE II).   As a researcher on the TUKIC project, Mariam has supported the research planning and data collection processes throughout the project including the organisation of body mapping workshops.

Dr George Kut worked on the project during the first phase of data collection. Dr Kut has extensive experience in strengthening government and civil societies’ collaboration and dialogue through participatory training. He has designed and facilitated processes for conflict early warning and response systems, peacebuilding policy analysis and advocacy with governments including designing and conducting several researches and documentation for civil society organizations and UN agencies. He also offers technical support on conflict and gender sensitive programming. Kut’s  experience in training in multicultural contexts for over 20 years spans across Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa. He has developed a number of courses and training materials on peacebuilding for civil society organizations, local community groups and UN agencies. Dr. Kut has a PhD in International Studies and Social Sciences from Coventry University, U.K and is also a holder of MA degree in Peace and Reconciliation Studies from the same university  

Muslima Essak

Muslima was born and raised in Mombasa. She has degree in counselling  psychology from the University of Nairobi. Muslima is also a talented artist with a keen interest in exploring the potential of using arts in therapy. As part of the TUKIC project, Muslima assisted Xavier Verhoest in the body mapping workshops. Muslima’s background in counselling and contacts with local organisations were also very useful for the project.
